NINT Meeting Minutes March 13, 2018

Terry Deno opened the meeting at 7:00pm. 23 Attendees
There have been concerns expressed about cars exceeding the speed limit on the new Barns Rd. There is a Traffic Hot Line for reporting speeders. Dial 311 or call 625-4150, option 2. The best way to have problems addressed is to report them.
Next month’s meeting agenda will include a presentation on “Cyber Internet Security and Kids”. Clara Strom will speak on the services available at the Library.
Jeanine McKinney reported $62 were donated at our February meeting. The balance in the account is $6,794.67. She announced that Ben Kline (Elvis Impersonator) will be performing on July 11 at the Summer Concert Series.
Terry asked for suggestions for speakers for the next few meetings. Suggestions can be emailed to him.
Matt Iris, Energy Engineer from Avista spoke about energy use and savings. LED lights have been improving and prices are coming down. They have shown good returns on savings. Natural Gas is much cheaper than Electric. Some suggestions for saving on Energy costs include upgrading water heaters, converting heating from electric to gas, and using “smart thermostats”. Some rebates can be found on line.
Mark Davies reported on the Community Assembly meeting. The PeTT (Pedestrian, Traffic and Transportation Committee) will host members of the city council, police department, streets dept. and the parks dept. on Tuesday, March 27 for a forum to discuss the imposition of 20 mph speed limits around all city parks and certain residential areas. Meeting is at 6pm at the West Central Community Center.
Community stakeholders and City staff will meet on March 29, 2-4pm at the West Central Community Center. Join the kickoff summit launch of Spokane Matters 2.0. District-specific problems will be reviewed and solutions discussed.
Free trees are available from City of Spokane Urban Forestry. Our Neighborhood is giving away 1000 trees. For more information go to www.arborday.org/spokane.
Chief Gary Park is hosting Taco’s with the Cops on April 14 from 11:30am to 1:30pm at Freedom Burrito on 3115 E. Mission. All are invited.
Westside Community Center will host Conversation with the Chief on March 27 from 6:30 to 8:00pm.
Kristen Zimmer from the Water Department spoke about Water Conservation. 100% of our water use comes from the Aquafer. About 46% is used for residential use. Most of it is outdoor use. The City is encouraging property owners to conserve water use by replacing grass areas with drought tolerant plants and mulch. They are offering a Landscape Rebate Program beginning in May. You can earn $.50/sq. ft up to $500 credit on your utility bill for decreasing the amount of lawn in your yard. Find more information on May 1st at waterstewardship.org.
